Teacher Profile: Mrs. Gorton

February 7, 2012

Sue Gorton  is new to our teaching staff this school year and we are excited to have her at our school as our fourth grade teacher. This month we would like to focus our teacher profile on Mrs. Gorton.

Q: If we were to take a tour of your classroom, what would we find?

The best thing you would find in my classroom is the students! They are active, enthusiastic, and up for the challenges I give them. The newest verses and catechisms being learned are always posted on the wall and we have established saying them in “thought groups down on the rug” to help us learn them. On most days you would also find K’nex in various stages of creation, marble kingdoms being established, and if you come during DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) you would find students enthralled in a variety of books being read in a variety of favorite spots.

Q: What does the 4th grade history curriculum and Bible curriculum cover?

Fourth grade history primarily focuses on Pennsylvania history. We have met the first Pennsylvanians, established colonies, met William Penn, and begun settling the frontier. During the time period of studying the Native Americans from the Pennsylvania region, each student created and displayed a project related to that topic. Displays ranged from pottery and clothing to wigwams and longhouses; they were top quality.

Our Bible curriculum for fourth grade covers the period of time from creation through Saul as well as the catechism and verses bringing us from the fall of man to our benefits in Christ as believers. How valuable and precious are the times of laying before the children again and again the truth, simplicity, beauty, and power of the gospel…if our students gain all knowledge and lose their souls then all has been lost.

Q: Has your class gone on any field trips this year?

Our first field trip was to the Whitaker Center. We had completed a unit on the human body (that included brave students observing and dissecting a pig’s liver, heart, brain, and other various organs) and participated in a hands-on session primarily about our hearts and lungs.

Q: Will 4th grade be working on any projects this marking period?

As mentioned earlier, the students completed a history project for the unit on the “first Pennsylvanians” or Native Americans. They have also just completed a reading challenge where everyone in the class read a missionary biography. The next step will be completing a folder with maps, a creative cover, and writings about the most impacting parts. Part of the information from the folder will be used in a wall display locating the missionaries on a world map. And hopefully the students will continue reading more and more missionary biographies and our “wall of missionaries” will grow and grow.

By the end of the year they will also hopefully have completed a science project on tree identification as well as a project exploring another country.

Q: What are your interests and hobbies outside school?

To be part of my family I have to love to read…and I do! My favorite author is C. H. Spurgeon, but I must admit that well-written children’s book are on the top of my list of loved books also. I love to be outside and I don’t even have to be doing anything if I can just be outside. But I do enjoy walking (and talking). And most of all I like having my family home with me and being all together often leads to game playing.

Q: What do you appreciate most about teaching at Grace?

Of all the things I appreciate about Grace (and there are many) the thing I appreciate most is knowing that we are here for a reason and that faithful prayer covers all we do.

Thanks to Mrs. Gorton for sharing these responses. Check back next month when we will feature Shawna Morrow, also new to our staff,  in another teacher profile.

Parents share some thoughts about GBCS

January 10, 2012

In this month’s post we would like to share some comments from current parents about our Christian school. All of us in the GBCS community have our own stories to share and it is exciting and encouraging to hear how God is using the Christian school in the lives of our students and their families. Interested in sharing some of your GBCS experiences? Feel free to leave a comment on this post or send us an email at gbcsblog@gmail.com.

“As a 1990 graduate of Grace Baptist Christian School, I was thrilled when our daughter was old enough to become a second-generation student at Grace. While the other mother’s were tearfully settling their children into their kindergarten desks on the first day, I was feeling patently obvious and not a bit sad. I knew our daughter had great years ahead of her! She is now in seventh grade, has been joined at Grace by two of her brothers (with the other two soon to follow), and we couldn’t be happier with our total school experience. The teachers have a strong sense of partnering with parents in the Christian education of their children and welcome communication between home and school. They make every effort, with the input of the parents, to provide each individual child with the help he or she needs to succeed academically, physically, and spiritually. We greatly value the Christian worldview and truths that are consistently presented to our children as well as the excellent academic tradition at Grace. From personal experience, I can say that Grace graduates are more than prepared for the next step of life and education. The faculty’s commitment to following up the first-rate elementary years with a middle school education that emphasizes challenging content material, critical thinking skills, good study habits, and proficient public speaking in the context of God-exalting instruction ensures that!”- Rachel VG.

“The Christian School of Grace Baptist Church is such a blessing to our family. My husband and I were looking for a school that would support us in raising our children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. We know that there are many strong academic schools out there and academics are very important. But we also desired for our children to be educated in an environment where Biblical principles and a Christian worldview would be an integral part of their education. We feel like we have found both a strong academic school and a solidly Biblical school in Grace Baptist. We appreciate the love and care that all the teachers and administrators show to our children and thank God for them. The Christian School of Grace Baptist Church is a blessing and God’s provision for a strong education for our children.”-Heather L.

“Our daughter has attended Grace Baptist Christian School since Kindergarten and we have loved the school since day one. Our daughter has found the teachers, the small class sizes, and her classmates to be wonderful for her education and development. We as parents appreciate the quality teachers who show a tremendous passion for teaching our daughter about the things she needs to learn educationally, but more importantly teaching her about Christ and how to follow him even as a young child. We appreciate all of their teachers as they have encouraged our daughter to learn more about Christ, memorize scripture verses, sing songs of faith, and love those she interacts with. All of this has made for us to be completely satisfied with the education and development our daughter has had at Grace Baptist Christian School. We cannot recommend it more!”- Karl & Trude B.

“My husband and I placed both of our children in Grace Baptist when they were of kindergarten age and we haven’t regretted our decision since. The staff and the teachers are so devoted to providing our children with the best education possible. In fact, they are doing things now that I didn’t realize they could do at such a young age. I believe it has to do with the positive and loving atmosphere that is created throughout the entire school. They also believe that along with academics, developing and demonstrating Christ’s character is of utmost importance. They take the time to address discipline issues with the idea of “how would Christ want us to respond” or “how could you have dealt with this issue differently”? They are dedicated to creating a well-rounded individual and their objectives match up to our objectives at home. Our children couldn’t be happier and neither could we.“- Trisha K.

Our School’s History

October 24, 2011

In 1968 the Christian School of GBC opened its doors and has been used of God to educate not only children from our church family, but also other children from the greater Carlisle area.

Parents were concerned in the 1950′s and 1960′s with the inconsistencies between what their children were being taught in Sunday school and church and what they were being taught in public school. The influence the public school had upon the children was far too strong to ignore.

Though initially it seemed “the problem of finances, administration, curriculum” was too great to overcome, there was a persistence from parents specifically to continue with the goal of establishing a Christian school.

The Value of a GBCS Education

October 18, 2011

The value of a GBCS Education includes a God-centered education, outstanding teachers and high academic achievement. In this post we want to elaborate on what we think are some important points of a God-centered education.

A God-centered education.

Keep students from the curse of the divided life and instill in their hearts and minds ideas and ideals that are truly Christian.

The main feature of a Christian school curriculum is that all subject matter is understood in relationship to a personal and sovereign God.

Our school’s first board, formed in the mid 1960′s, established objectives for the school. Several of the objectives are the following:

1. “To teach that all of life must be related to God, and thus that all education must be in accordance with the Word of God.”

2. “To integrate all academic subjects with the Word of God.”

3. “To promote the application of Biblical principles to every part of life. It is hoped that through the teaching of the Bible courses and catechism and using every other opportunity to speak to the children of God in creation, of His sovereign rule and providence in history, of His orderliness in math, His wondrous and mighty works in science, His justice and love in correction, that the children will recognize His works and be aware of His presence in a practical and meaningful way in all phases of life. Academic improvement should go hand in hand with the spiritual improvement of the child in the Christian School.
